Title: Frontloading CFD to yield CAD-embedded Productivity Benefits

Today manufacturing product development cycles need to get shorter and shorter as either new or increased numbers of products get to the market faster. With engineering simulation technology, increasing product complexity can be designed much closer to its limits and therefore overdesign can be reduced - but it has a knock-on effect of more and more requests for CFD simulations by stretched simulation experts. Embedding 3D CFD simulation into Mechanical Computer Aided Design (MCAD) tools is an effective way of improving user productivity and democratizing the use of CFD. It allows for more CFD simulations early in a product development design process where it has the most impact at the least cost. Such frontloaded CFD simulations need to be done directly on the latest 3D CAD model and need to provide results in hours rather than days or weeks. In this session, the implementation of the FloEFD™ 3D CFD code from Mentor Graphics, that is embedded in both the Siemens NX and Solid Edge CAD kernels will be outlined. A unique SmartCells™ based meshing approach and built-in automation technologies allows for the frontloading of 3D CFD simulations both early and throughout PLM enabled workflows. The frontloading methodology ultimately enables the use of CFD in the design process by CAD engineers and automates tedious CFD meshing by an order of magnitude - within common CAD environments and PLM workflows - without compromising the resulting accuracy compared to typical traditional CFD approaches even with coarse meshes. This technology will be illustrated by way of various application examples.

For too long, printed circuit board (PCB) development has been limited to incremental improvements around design cycle-times, cost-control initiatives, and quality improvement drivers. Transformative product development enables the creation of real business opportunities throughout the product development lifecycle, from concept creation to after-market servicing. This session will review Mentor’s initiatives to deliver transformative PCB systems development through greater integration of the mechanical and electrical domains:  ECAD-MCAD co-design; 3D physical layout and simulation; reliability analysis; integrated requirements for capture and tracking; and the incorporation of manufacturability feedback into design. This session includes the methodologies of integrating native PCB systems data into Siemens Teamcenter, and the resulting opportunities this presents for driving organizational smart innovation initiatives.
