Seamlessly integrated processes are key to keep product development costs to a minimum. However many companies fail to link different process steps to one another especially in the engineering phase: They design the model in CAD according to nominal values, they entirely redesign the model to tolerance center, they define CAM operations, they manually create measuring machine programs and they also create first article inspection reports manually without any associative reference to the 3D model. As a consequence any changes in the CAD model lead to many modifications in the downstream activities to keep them up to date. Without seamless process integrations these modifications have to be done manually which is error-prone and time consuming and eventually drives costs for product development.
However by using so called Technical Elements (TEs) for the design in NX, companies can link all these process steps to one another. TEs are “smart” user defined features which carry all meta information (e.g. attributes, tolerance information, surface finish, etc.) to automate downstream activities. Having these TEs in your 3D model they allow to create tolerance center models, PMIs, measuring machine programs, FAIs, etc. on a button click. At the same time these TEs help the designer standardize the CAD model as all Technical Elements are always created the same way.
This presentation shows how companies can seamlessly integrate their processes by using Technical Elements in the design stage in NX thus eliminating lots of manual work for downstream activities.
