Overview of benefits of using JT and STEP AP 242XML

Abstract:  This presentation provides insights from an automotive point of view based on leading practices and project experiences.

Product development is a key differentiator and key success factor for product innovation and design within the Automotive Industry and other discrete manufacturing industries. Product development is a process which is typically performed across a global and distributed network of companies. Communication and collaboration are core capabilities to leverage the innovative power of such networks. As a competitive advantage standards need to be established within and across companies to ensure a consistent and efficient mode of collaboration.

In addressing business & organizational challenges the correct set of processes, methods, tools and organizational capabilities need to be enabled.

In the automotive industry the abrupt changing surroundings and heterogeneous IT landscapes need to be covered with open PLM landscapes and corresponding data formats. As a result, in 2000 Daimler established JT as an internal standard data format and has created more than 12.5million JT files. JT was one of the key enablers for the changeover from CATIA V5 to Siemens NX and is used in the complete lifecycle. One of the most beneficial use cases is using JT for “Design in Context” in NX.

Daimler is also committed to the ProSTEP iViP Codex of PLM Openness (CPO) and will strategically use more and more JT (ISO 14306, with XTBrep) and STEP AP242XML (ISO 10303-242, e .g. for assembly structure) in collaboration processes with other OEMs, Joint Ventures and system suppliers worldwide.
