Abstract:  Orbital ATK Flight Systems in Utah has implemented 3D annotated models as a complete replacement for conventional 2D drawings on many products with good success. Implementing the use of Annotated 3D (PMI) products at Orbital ATK has involved design, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, suppliers, and customers. We have continually reworked and improved our processes and tools relating to PMI. Our main areas of improvement have been: refining how we interpret tolerances and requirements, how we handle large/complex assemblies, and use of sections and details. These efforts have led to a better understanding of the software and a better understanding of the needs for downstream users of PMI models. Benefits from successfully employing PMI products include: reduced design costs, shorter lead times in both design and overall manufacturing of product, less design iterations, and greatly improved product quality. These benefits have been recognized by management and are now being considered or utilized on new projects for both commercial and government customers.
