HP Solutions for Product Development Engineering

Streamline Prototyping with HP Designjet 3D Printing Solutions

HP Designjet 3D printers produce quality models and prototypes in the convenience of your office. Combined with the 3D printing function in PTC Pro/ENGINEER, HP 3D printing solutions set the standard for office-ready, anyone-can-use 3D printing. To learn more about HP Designjet 3D printing solutions, this article examines how the HP 3D printing solution fits in busy R&D and product development environments.

Workgroup 3D Model Printing

The HP Designjet 3D printer is a shared solution designed to create quality models and prototypes in the convenience of your office. Available models include the HP Designjet 3D Printer (produces ivory-color models) and the HP Designjet Color 3D Printer (produces single-color models from eight color options). With the included Ethernet 10/100 network connection, it is easy to share either printer within workgroups over the network.

The 3D printers are sized to fit next to a desk and consist of two primary components—the 3D printer and material bay. Each material bay contains 700 cc of usable material—enough to build continuously for about 48 hours without reloading. You can add an optional second material bay for extended build times.

R&D and product developers can easily use the HP Designjet 3D solution—expert operators are not required. With Pro/ENGINEER, simply select the regular print dialog to access the 3D print function, and the HP driver takes over the model printing process. Printer operation can be left unattended, for example, over the weekend, to maximize development time schedules. You can handle completed parts immediately after printing without gloves or post-curing.

Exceptional Model Quality

With HP Designjet 3D solutions, you can make useable and durable pre-assembled models with moving parts that meet your demands for fit, form, and functional testing. Each pass of the print head puts down a thin layer of reliable ABS materials, ensuring optimal results with the highest level of dimensional accuracy, near-molded plastic strength, and an effective time-to-model/cost ratio. The end result is a durable, precise, and functional model that can eliminate costly design faults and tooling mistakes.

The HP Designjet 3D software enhances operations with automatic real-time support structure generation for your models. This minimizes the amount of support material used, reduces build time, and improves support removal time for many parts. An auto-orientation feature determines the best orientation for your model for the fastest build time and least material usage.

Clean Post Processing: The HP Designjet 3D Removal System

To remove the supports from your models automatically, use the HP Designjet 3D removal system. Special ventilation or disposal methods or equipment are not typically required.[1] The HP Designjet 3D Support Removal Powder Kit includes a fully-enclosed detergent, so you can handle it without gloves. The solution removes the supports from your models without creating a mess, making it ideal for the office environment. In addition, waste materials (models, bases, and spools) are recyclable and collected as part of HP’s “take-back” program.

Quality 3D Printing That Saves Money

The HP Designjet 3D printing solution offers a low total cost of ownership (TCO) through a number of features. Because it is fully automated, no manual labor costs are needed. The materials themselves are among the most economical in the market. In addition, the automatic smart supports reduce the amount of support material needed, and thereby reduce printing and material removal time and cost. If you are outsourcing just five to ten models per month, the printer can pay for itself in one year. Detecting just one error before tooling can potentially save you thousands.[2]

HP 3D printing solutions deliver high value in terms of price and performance:

  • Save time and money with intuitive operation and automatic features.
  • Easily justify your purchase—HP 3D printers deliver a fast ROI.
  • Count on HP reliability and global support to get you up and running smoothly.
