Description:

This paper will describe Caterpillar’s journey to implementing an integrated, world class Design Re-use implementation using Active Workspace, Teamcenter Classification, and Geolus. Moving from a legacy system with about 500,000 searchable parts to a system that will be able to search over 4 million available designs, this tool and associated processes will lower cost throughout the lifecycle value chain. We’ll touch on the legacy tool and describe the need for tool and process integration. Starting with a 50,000 foot look at what Design Re-use is, we’ll then delve down into a progressively deep discussion including topics like process design, training, change management for an implementation involving as many as 10,000 Teamcenter users. We’ll show how the tools can extend well outside of traditional engineering design to incorporate users in logistics, purchasing, and customer parts sales. Included in the presentation will be discussion of lessons learned and how being a partner with the development team leads to a win-win. We’ll describe the initial definition along with future plans for adding more functionality and data to accommodate users throughout the enterprise.

 

Our plan is to present in 2 parts, the first being the high level executive description and the second being from the viewpoint of the process engineer.
