Description:

For many years the promises made for an integrated engineering and manufacturing value chain had been bold and covered entire conference venues. The results and effects had been meagre and shallow; most pilot applications never really deserved being named “proof of concepts”.

With this year’s Hannover fair and the presentation of Siemens “Closed Loop Manufacturing” things and perceptions are starting to change again.

A fully integrated cyber-physical value chain, where product development, enables simultaneous geometric and kinematic testing, a full fletched bill of processes and a layout of the entire manufacturing lines and machine code are getting tangible.

Flow is becoming the only relevant consideration for this fully digitized engineering and manufacturing network. The dependency is now on the right mental models of the engineers and their bosses.

Being able to maximize, maintain and support an entire eco system will require a new way of thinking and managing – our machines and processes are not the constraining resources anymore.

All flow parameters need to be understood and managed holistically  - processes, organizational structures and the narrow self-optimization of human nature need to be consequently subordinated to the paradigm of flow.

Effective engineering requires the ability to impact an eco-system, because in an more complex world with increasing uncertainty and shorter life cycles than ever time to market and adaptability are the only factors to prevail.
