Newport News Shipbuilding’s Digital Journey: Drawings to 4GD based Visual Work Instructions (25 min)
Frank DeLar, Newport News Shipbuilding

Brent Woodhouse, Newport News Shipbuilding

Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) has begun a journey toward a full Digital Enterprise across all Programs.  NNS has been building ships with drawings for 130 years.  With a transition to Siemens Teamcenter 9.x and NX 8.5 with 4th Generation Design (4GD), NNS started realizing the potential of using 4GD worksets to support assembly and manufacturing.  The NNS journey is a “brown field” story about transitioning from paper work packages referencing drawings to providing a digital work instruction that provide “Only what is needed to execute the work”.

This effort has expanded from a concept two years ago, to greater than a 1,000 electronic work instructions executed and the declaration of the next Aircraft Carrier, Enterprise (CVN80), to be drawingless. It has been a challenging journey, both technically and culturally, impacting every aspect of the NNS business model.  This brief will give a snapshot of this journey, lessons learned, and opportunities that presented themselves because of a focus on workers’ point of view.

Closed Loop Supplier Collaboration @ Mercury Marine (30 min)

Praveen Sreedhar , Mercury Marine

Mercury Marine relies on a diverse network of suppliers to deliver world class marine products.  Historically collaboration with suppliers was done on an ad hoc bases involving multiple fragmented systems often with unpredictable results.

Mercury Marine realized the need to create closed loop processes with suppliers to meet three major goals: Product leadership with innovative products, Speed to market to beat the competition, Early supplier collaboration as a tool for innovation supporting co-design and co-development.  Fundamental to this was the need to ensure real time design integration with global manufacturing and supply partners, effective supplier sourcing, track supplier performance, efficiency and document control with secure design data exchange. This session will focus on MM’s new approach to supplier collaboration and lessons learned in solution deployment.
