A Case Study in the Digital Thread Driving Business Process Improvement: From Virtual Commissioning to Production Execution

The emergence of integrated software and hardware products spanning the entire value chain of the product lifecycle – from product design, to production planning and engineering, then to manufacturing execution, and finally to ongoing service and product support – has enabled the emergence of the Digital Thread concept. Data shared between systems is being used to augment every aspect of the value chain, helping companies successfully create industry-leading products. There are countless examples of how this data sharing between systems can drive improvement in business processes, from design engineering to the factory floor. At last year’s PLM World, Hyla Soft delivered a presentation about how Siemens Teamcenter for Manufacturing capabilities linked many different groups within a manufacturing company together to drive business process improvement throughout the organization.

This presentation will investigate a different use case: how the Digital Thread can offer dramatic improvements in the planning and commissioning of new production facilities. This session will include a live demo of the various software products involved in the Digital Thread, as well as a roundtable discussion for attendees to discuss how the presentation material applies to their own organizations and experiences.

The presentation will follow the story of an industrial manufacturer planning a new production line in a new facility. The presentation will cover the following areas (in sequential order):

  1. The Production Planning for the new production line has been done digitally in Siemens Teamcenter Manufacturing Process Planner module. The entire manufacturing process has been digitally validated and optimized.
  2. The Production Plan from Teamcenter is integrated into Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation, where the performance and behavior of the new production line has been modeled and studied. Tecnomatix Plant Simulation is used to identify manufacturing bottlenecks and opportunities to increase manufacturing throughput. Sharing the production plan from Teamcenter Manufacturing to Plant Simulation creates value using the Digital Thread by delivering detailed process information as an input to the simulation model.
  3. Critical manufacturing processes within the Teamcenter production plan are studied in Siemens Tecnomatix Process Simulate to identify key process characteristics and validate the feasibility of the process. Doing so drives business process improvement by handling potential production problems before they occur in the real world. Again, the Digital Thread is used by maintaining one source of planning data in Teamcenter, and creating additional value in a specialized tool like Process Simulate.
  4. Finally, the new production line will manage its production execution with Siemens SIMATIC IT Production Suite for MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems). Once again, the production plan in Teamcenter is used to test and configure the MES before it is deployed to the new production line, improving time-to-market and reducing manufacturing ramp-up time.

The Virtual Commissioning of Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES)

Information technology has been playing a larger role in manufacturing with a trending increase in companies deploying some type of software solution to help improve their production process. Many of these solutions have evolved into what is called Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for production automation. The typical purpose of these systems is to cut waste, increase quality and monitor production processes while still increasing throughput. Although MES systems offer a tremendous amount of value, one of the most difficult aspects of achieving those benefits is having a successful implementation. There are several risks and factors to be considered when commissioning an MES system. However, one of the most critical aspects is the integration of MES with automation, ERP and other manufacturing-dependent systems.

This presentation will explore the power of Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation in overcoming those integration challenges and helping companies achieve a smooth transition into the world of MES. Although there are many simulation packages on the market, Plant Simulation offers a distinct advantage in its powerful integration capabilities. By leveraging these capabilities, companies can simulate their manufacturing processes and prepare their systems for upcoming changes. These preparations can be with virtual commissioning PLCs for new logic to communicate with MES, changes to ERP systems to receive new information flows, or any other system that may need to send or receive data from MES. By simulating these processes in preparation for a commissioning, companies can significantly reduce the risk and ensure a successful go-live for their new MES system.
